Back when Apex Legends Season 12: Defiance dropped, it brought a boatload of changes that had the community buzzing. From a brand new Legend and a limited-time Control mode to a hefty list of weapon tweaks and bug fixes, Respawn made sure there was plenty to chew on. PlayStation users got a little extra love on the pre-load front, but the rest of the patch notes were stacked for everyone. If someone is still digging through the nitty-gritty of what changed, this breakdown covers the important bits without making a player’s head spin.

Pre-Load and Launch Details
PlayStation players caught a break here. Pre-loading was expected to go live ahead of the official Season 12 launch, giving folks a chance to download the patch early. The catch? The update could not be installed until the new season officially kicked off. Xbox, PC, and Nintendo Switch players were not so lucky, as pre-loading was not available for those platforms based on how previous updates had been handled. It was a classic case of “hurry up and wait” for most of the player base.
Legend Balance Changes
Crypto Gets a Major Overhaul
Crypto mains had a field day with these changes. The Surveillance Drone received a serious rework, and the quality-of-life updates were long overdue.
-
The Drone HUD now shows gamestate info like ring timers, minimap, killfeed, team status, and ping information.
-
The old Crypto health/shield display on the Drone HUD was repurposed to show the Drone’s own health.
-
Survey Beacon markers are visible in-world while piloting the Drone, just like when controlling Crypto himself.
-
Neurolink detection FOV increased from 160 to 240 degrees.
-
Neurolink detection is disabled while the Drone is being recalled.
-
Drone health dropped from 60 to 50, so it is a bit easier to shoot down.
-
Drone deployment got a rework: pressing the Tactical button sends the Drone flying straight ahead for a few seconds, and if it hits a wall, it reorients itself to face away from the wall.
-
Holding the Tactical button launches the Drone forward and then immediately puts Crypto into Drone View.
-
The Drone HUD marker is now always visible on-screen while deployed, not just when the Drone was off-screen.
That is a whole lot of quality-of-life in one patch. Crypto went from being situational to feeling much more fluid in the middle of a fight.
Caustic Gets a Nerf
Caustic players probably let out a sigh when they saw this one. Nox Gas Traps are now destroyable after detonation, and they only have 150 HP. Detonated traps expire at 11 seconds instead of 12.5 seconds, and gas effects linger for two seconds after the barrel is destroyed or expires. Gas particles still hang around a bit longer as they dissipate, but the days of an indestructible gas cloud locking down an entire room took a hit.
Weapon and Equipment Balance
Supply Drop Rotation
The Alternator SMG returned to ground loot, while the Volt SMG took its place in the Supply Drop. That was a fair trade — the Volt packs a punch, and putting it in the care package made it feel special.
Weapon Changes
| Weapon | Change |
|---|---|
| Volt SMG | Damage increased from 15 to 17; max mag size increased from 28 to 30 |
| Triple Take | Removed projectile growth from bullets; damage reduced from 23 to 21 per bullet |
| Rampage LMG | Damage reduced from 28 to 26; Revved state shots reduced from ~40 to ~34 |
Hop-Ups
-
Kinetic Feeder for the Triple Take and Peacekeeper: sliding significantly speeds up choke time and automatically reloads rounds.
-
Hammerpoint Rounds returned for the P2020, Mozambique, and RE-45.
-
Shatter Caps for the 30-30 Repeater and Bocek Bow now passively affect hip-fire and can no longer be toggled on or off. 30-30 pellet damage dropped from 8 to 7, and Bow pellet damage dropped from 12 to 11.
Fully Kitted Rotation
Added: RE-45, Triple Take, Peacekeeper, Prowler, and Havoc.
Removed: Mastiff, 30-30 Repeater, R-301, CAR, and Longbow.
Crafting Updates
The VK-47 Flatline and Longbow DMR became craftable for 30 materials at any crafting station. Crafted weapons came with no attachments and two boxes of ammo. Weapons in crafting could not be found on the ground, which made players think twice before dropping Fragement or hot zones. Medkit crafting price was lowered from 20 to 15 materials, and the Kinetic Feeder was added to the crafting rotation.
Bug Fixes and Quality of Life
Respawn knocked out a ton of fixes in this update. Some of the more notable ones included:
-
Fixed an error that told players to come back in a decade when matchmaking. That joke got old fast.
-
Fixed an issue where multiple Legends were missing voice lines when pinging a caged flyer.
-
Fixed cases where Crypto’s Drone would not show friendly nameplates.
-
Fixed an exploit where players could use melee on incline surfaces to get a speed boost while sliding.
-
Fixed a bug where charging up the Sentinel required 2 cells instead of 1 when wearing golden armor.
-
Reduced L-STAR impact visual effects.
-
Fixed cases where players could get a jump boost from deathboxes near Horizon’s Gravity Lift after it had been used.
-
Reticle color customization values were limited to 0-255 to avoid exploits.
-
Improved Ash’s tactical by making it bounce off objects it cannot stick to instead of destroying itself.
-
Improved Ash’s ultimate targeting by preferring locations farther away.
-
Storm Point fixes: players could now shoot through chain-link fences at Antenna, Final Round Rings no longer ended in areas with no cover or Prowler Dens, and a few other map-specific issues were cleaned up.
-
World’s Edge: Fragment changed from high-tier to mid-tier loot, a change that actually happened in the 11.1 update but was left out of those patch notes.
-
Fixed cases where quitting players could deny kills and assists.
-
Reviving no longer resets damage history.
-
Added the ability to see a teammate’s survival item while the inventory is open.
-
Improved wildlife combat versus vehicles and made stunning wildlife with Wattson’s fences and Ash’s tactical more reliable.
Private Match Updates
Observers and tournament organizers got some love too. The patch added a toggle to disable the kill feed while in free cam, fixed ring visibility on the mini map, and fixed kill calculations for the Status & Stats screen. Stats Summary generation was fixed for team slots with default names, and Club features were disabled in Private Match. The Real-Time API received new events like “weaponSwitched,” plus player names for squadEliminated and matchStateEnd events. It also added teammate names for observerSwitched events and fixed items appearing as “Unrecognized.”
All in all, Season 12: Defiance was a beefy update. Crypto got a well-deserved glow-up, Caustic mains had to adapt, and the weapon meta shifted with the Alternator coming back and the Volt going into the Supply Drop. The bug fix list was long enough to make anyone appreciate the work that goes into keeping Apex Legends running smoothly, even if some of those fixes arrived a bit later than players would have liked.
